Tinos sights

row 1
Tinos is a mountainous island with a coastline of 106 km and a population of 8,000. While popular, it has managed to retain its integrity and natural beauty: beautiful landscapes and beaches, and picturesque villages with unique architecture make Tinos a perfect summer destination!

Tinos is an Orthodox hot-spot for religious Greeks, who travel there to visit the historic church of Panagia Megalochari/Evangelistria (the Blessed Virgin Mary), established in 1823.
There are numerous other churches and chapels, like Agia Aikaterini in Kampos or the marble church of Agios Ioannis and Agia Triada in Falatados.
There are also Orthodox monasteries, like the Monastery of Virgin Mary on the mountainside of Kechrovouni (built during the 10th and 11th century, it is considered as one of the most significant and beautiful monasteries in Greece).
Catholic monasteries worth visiting, are the Convent of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ in the area of Exombourgo and the Holy Convent of the Ursuline order founded in 1862 (currently home to the Folklore Museum)

Tinos is also an art-enthusiast favorite, as it is the home of renowned artists, such as Nikolaos Gyzis, Nikiforos Lytras and Yannoulis Chalepas, while there’s an emphasis on marble sculpting: according to the legend, the famous sculptor of the ancient times, Fidias, taught the secrets of marble art to the inhabitants, and the story could be confirmed by so many chapels, arches, fountains and pigeon lofts around the island. If you’re in the village of Pyrgos, a visit to the Marble Art Museum is due, as well as to the Gallery of Tinian Artists. Plus, there’s the Foundation of Tinos Civilization, and the Archaeological Museum at Tinos town (Hora).

For history lovers, a trip to the ruins of the ancient Sanctuary of Poseidon and Amphitrite at Kionia is a must. Furthermore, you can visit the Memorial of the battlecruiser Elli and the Memorial of the Fallen.
Worth-seeing historical sites, are the Mycenaean tholos tombs in Agia Thekla, the ancient town of Exombourgo built in the 8th century BC, as well as the Peisistratos Aqueduct, used up until 1934
